Gavin Smith and Marvin Rettenmaier

Marvin Rettenmaier  was chip leader after the first day of play in the $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em event of the 1,734 players who started.

He came back to compete in Day 2 of the WSOP 2011 event with the biggest stack of the 296 players remaining. Marvin had a stack of 174.1K when the average was 44K.

The German player of  Team Titan took seat 6 at table #383 and had the position on his main opponent of the table, the famous Canadian Gavin Smith, who won a bracelet at the WSOP last year and has accumulated more than $5 million in his career since 1998. 171 players are to be paid in this event.

Level 13 – Blinds 800/1600, Ante 200 – Average 65K and 198 left

Marvin Rettenmaier had a stack of 190K at the beginning of the level. Nothing special happened during the first two hours of the day.

In one hand, everybody folded and Gavin Smith completed from the small blind. Marvin checked his BB.

On the flop 7♦ 4♦ 6♥  both players checked.

Turn A♥
Gavin Smith opened 3.2K and Marvin called.

They checked on the river, which was the 7♥, and Marvin showed J4 offsuit and took the pot. Gavin mucked his cards.

In the middle of the level, Gavin Smith opened to 3.6K and Marvin called. A short stack in late position pushed all-in for 25K and Marvin made the call whereas Smith gave up.

Rettenmaier: 7♦ 7♠
Short stack: Q♣ Q♦

A miraculous 7 came at the river and Marvin Rettenmaier climbed to 215K with an average stack of 69.9K and 188 players left.

At the end of the level, a player in middle position raised to 3.4K. Marvin made it more expensive, 9.7K. His opponent decided to minimum 4-bet 18.6K. Marvin Rettenmaier 5-bet to 30.1K total but his adversary 6-bet him to 45.5K.

Marvin asked for a count of his opponent’s stack. “50.4 K” answered the dealer and Marvin announced all-in. It was immediately paid.

Marvin’s Jacks are behind the Aces of his opponent.

Board: 3-2-5-8-5

Marivin is down to 130K after this bad break.

Level 14 – Blinds 1K/2K, Ante 300 – 174 players left – The bubble time !!

The bubble exploded after 15 minutes in this level and the 171 players remaining would all finish in the money.

At the dinner break, Marvin with 150K was above the average of 94K with 138 players left.

Level 15 – Blinds 1.2K/2.4K, Ante 300

Marvin Rettenmaier grinded a lot and succeeded in reaching 200K and finished this level with 207K.

Relaxing Time for Marvin

Relaxing Time for Marvin

He had a nice long massage and playing his A-game again after his big mistake few hours before.  Average: 142K with 94 players remaining.

Later in the day, Marvin Rettenmaier busted out the French player Guillaume Cescut in a blinds battle. Marvin with A8 won a 160K pot against the A9 of his French opponent. An 8 came on the flop and Marvin was up to around 300K.

Average: 206K and 63 players left.

During the last 2 hours of the day Marvin lost QQ versus AJ preflop on a 170K pot.

Final board: A-A-3-A-2 – His opponent amazingly finished with quads of Aces.

But a few hands later, Marvin Rettenmaier took down a 140K pot with AA against KJ preflop and was back to 300K. He was grinding a lot, enjoying the short stacks. Up to 350K before the last level of the day.

Unfortunately, on the last hand of the day, Marvin was eliminated after losing a mega pot of 600K with pockets Kings against AK. That’s awfull for the German pro from Team Titan who was a super favorite in the event. But an ace came on the river to “kill” Marvin.

He finished in 40th position of the 1,734 players who started Event #36.

We are all disappointed for this bad ending as Marvin had deserved a much better result in this tournament.

Marvin Rettenmaier won $12,860 and will be back soon for another WSOP event.
