In the 1998 movie “Rounders” actors Matt Damon and Edward Norton played two friends who quickly had to make a huge amount of cash to pay off a large debt. They undertook this task by playing high stakes poker.

While the film was not a commercial success, it became a cult hit and helped generate interest in the game of poker. As pro player Vanessa Rousso described it, “There have been lots of movies that have included poker, but only Rounders really captures the energy and tension in the game. And that’s why it stands as the best poker movie ever made.”

A sequel is now in the works.

Last Thursday, Miramax Films announced: “Miramax and the Weinstein Company today announced an agreement to create sequels to some of Miramax’s best-known properties and to partner on potential new television shows and special edition home entertainment products. The first films to be produced under the agreement will be sequels to ‘Bad Santa,’ ‘Rounders,’ and ‘Shakespeare in Love.’”

According to the Internet Movie Database website, “Rounders 2” is set to hit cinemas in 2012 and both Damon and Norton will reprise their roles. It is not clear if costars John Malkovich and John Turturro will return to play in the sequel.
