Marvin Rettenmaier Chipleader of Day 1
Sam Trickett, Marvin Rettenmaier and Christophe Benzimra from Team Titan joined the action in the World Series of Poker Event #36 $2,500 No Limit Hold’em. A total of 1,734 players started the tournament, being held in the big poker room of the Rio – Las Vegas.
After ten 60-minute levels of play, only 296 survived and qualified for Day 2. Marvin Rettenmaier emerged as chipleader after the first day of action.
The pace of eliminations was really amazingly fast. Unfortunately Sam Trickett and Christophe Benzimra didn’t succeed in qualifying for the next step.
However, Marvin Rettenmaier had a wonderful day, finishing it as the chipleader with a huge stack of 174,100 when the average stack was 44K. With an average stack of 7,500 at the beginning of the day and a lot of eliminations, the players didn’t have a lot of time to try to build a stack in order to avoid being eliminated quickly.
Unfortunately, things didn’t start very good for Sam and Christophe.
Christophe lost a big part of his stack during Level 3 at blinds 75/150.
After a raise/reraise/call preflop and a bet- call on the flop 5♣ 4♠ 3♣ , the turn came 9♥ and the small blind player raised to 1,450 and our French pro Christophe Benzimra made it 3,575. His opponent quickly moved all-in forcing Christophe to fold his pocket Queens.
After this one, Christophe was down to 3K and had to take risks. At the end of this level he was at 3.7K.

Sam Trickett was at the opposite side of the big poker room and when we finally found him he had already lost half of his chips. Just before the second break he lost a flip with AJ against pocket 7s. The board came: 6-9-3-4-7 and the Englishman was down to 3.5K.
The two players got eliminated very quickly after the break. We will see them soon for another event of these WSOP 2011 tournaments and we hope that they will have more luck with the cards.
The third Titan Team member registered for this event, Marvin Rettenmaier, had a completely different day compared to his two mates.
He arrived at the Rio after Level 2 and took his seat really set to perform well in Event #36.
He quickly climbed to 10K bluffing one of his American opponents.
Then he eliminated a player during the Level 3. At blinds 75/150, Marvin Rettenmaier raised to 450 from the high-jack. position. The player at the button pushed all-in for 4,600 and Marvin decided to call.
Marvin was a little bit ahead with his pocket 10s against the AJ of his adversary. No ace, no jack, and Marvin Rettemaier was up to 14.4K.

Level 4 – Blinds 100/200:
A player opened to 450 under the gun + 1 and the button reraised to 1,050. Marvin in small blind 4-bet to 2,600 and only the button made the call.
Flop K♥ 9♠ 8♠
Marvin Rettenmaier bet 2,100 and his opponent raised to 4,800. Marvin moved all-in for 15K and the man in front snap-called showing immediately pocket Aces. His face changed of expression at once when he saw the pocket Kings of the German Titan player who hit the flop for the top set. Turn and river were two blanks and Marvin was up to 31K.
During Level 5, Marvin lost a flip with AK against Jacks and was down to 24K for an average of 9.4K. So really not a big problem for Marvin.
Level 6 was really quiet for Marvin who lost few small pots without showdown and reached the third break of the day after 6 hours with 17K.
Level 7 – Blinds 200/400 ante 50
The UTG player raised to 900 and Marvin at the cut off and a third player at the button called.
Flop Q♥ 6♥ 2♠
The UTG player, a very experienced player, checked and Marvin opened to 1,700. The button folded but UTG player paid.
Both players checked the turn, the 9♠
On the river, Q♦ the american player donkbet 2,800 and Marvin paid. Marvin turned over pocket 8s and it was enough to take the pot.
Then Marvin 3-bet to 4,125 pre-flop at the cut-off after the UTG +1 player had bet 1,750. This one moved all-in for 7K total and Marvin was fast to pay.
Marvin J♣ J♦
UTG +1 player: A♥ J♠
The board brought a straight and Marvin had to split this pot where he was 80% favorite. That’s poker !
A few hands later, Marvin Rettenmaier sent another player home in a pre-flop confrontation. His AK beat the J♠ 10♠ of his opponent.
At the end of Level 7, he was sitting behind a comfortable 37K stack when the average was of 22.2K. 585 players were left from the 1,734 who started the day.
During Level 8 at blinds 250/500 ante 50, Marvin said he had a nice rush of cards and finished it with 44K without showing his cards. Average 26.2K – 465 players left.
Then the things accelerated suddenly.
Level 9 – Blinds 300/600 ante 75:
The high-jack player opened to 1,625 and Marvin “Banzaï” Rettenmaier called with 4c4d in small blind.
Flop A♠ 4♠ 3♣
Marvin check-raised to 4,625 after the high-jack player had bet 1,850. Call.
Turn: 4♥
Nice card for Marvin who decided to lead betting 5,625. His opponent decided to move all-in for a little bit less than 25K. Easy call with big smile for Rettenmaier. His opponent mucked his hand and left the table KO while Marvin stacked his 75K in chips.
423 players left for an average of 30K.
Level 10 – Blinds 400/800 ante 75 – the big pot.
Marvin raised to 1,700 and both small and big blinds called.
Flop 4♦ 2♠ 7♠
Marvin bet 2,600 and the small blind just called. The big blind squeezed to 10.4K and Marvin decided just to call. Then, the small blind moved all-in for around 15K. The big blind player tanked a little minute before shoving over the top. Marvin called and it is time for showdown.
Marvin Rettenmaier: 44 for a set
Small blind: As Js for the nut flush draw
Big blind: 22 for an inferior set.
The turn was the Q♦ and the river the K♥.
Marvin’s hand held and the German player won a monster pot to climb at 165K just 20 minutes before the end of Day 1.
He succeeded in maintaining his stack and grinded few pots at the very end finishing as the overall chipleader with 174.1K.
